Our responsibility
Systematic environmental management – for 30 years
On 2 August 1996, Dr. Schaette GmbH, now SaluVet GmbH, became the first company in the Lake Constance-Upper Swabia Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) region to be certified under the EU Environmental Management System EMAS (Regulation (EC) No 1221/2009). The system stands for the responsible use of resources and the continuous improvement of environmental performance through independent audits and transparent reporting.

We put environmental management into practice every day – through many small and large steps. This film uses specific examples from various departments to show how this translates into active environmental protection in our day-to-day work.

Part of everyday business life
Sustainability and the responsible use of natural resources have always been part of SaluVet’s corporate philosophy. Ever since the company was founded over 100 years ago, medicinal plants, herbs and natural raw materials have been at the heart of everything we do.
A deep connection to nature and the careful use of resources form the basis for all our business decisions and go far beyond issues such as waste prevention or energy saving.
Consequently, it may happen that a product which is good in its own right is not retained in our range or is not added to it if it fails to comply with our guidelines in one respect. For us, economic success is not the decisive factor.
SaluVet aims to make its energy use more sustainable, step by step. We are already using various resource-efficient technologies to this end:
● Photovoltaic systems on the roofs
● Wood pellet heating
● Geothermal energy for heating and cooling
We adopted an environmentally friendly approach to construction when building our new logistics hall and our administration building:
● Selection of materials in accordance with environmental standards
● Plenty of natural light for staff to ensure a pleasant indoor climate and save energy
● Green roofs to promote biodiversity; these also serve as thermal insulation
● Partner companies from the region to minimise transport distances

Manufacturing and Logistics:
● Through effective planning, short transport routes and the use of suitable machinery, we achieve optimal processes. This enables us to minimise our consumption of valuable resources such as water, energy and raw materials. We avoid leftovers and waste as much as possible
● When sourcing raw materials, we give preference to regional growers and suppliers; wherever possible, we opt for organically produced raw materials
● In our logistics operations, we use packaging and cushioning materials made from recycled cardboard to protect products during transit
● Thanks to modern technologies, we minimise the use of chemical substances in our analytical and quality control processes

Biodiversity at SaluVet
With the power of nature
We harness the power of nature in our products. It therefore goes without saying that we are committed to protecting nature and our environment as best we can by acting sustainably and responsibly across all areas of our business.
Design of the SaluVet outdoor grounds
In 2021, the outdoor grounds, including a medicinal herb garden, were completed. The garden is brimming with ideas for putting sustainability into practice and demonstrates how creating diverse habitats fosters a rich variety of life. This is based on native plants, which serve as a source of sustenance for native wildlife.
Instead of a lawn, we find a meadow here, which is home not only to grasses but also to herbs and flowers, and which is mown only 2–3 times a year. Following the new build, the existing soil was not enriched for sustainability reasons. The aim was to adapt the planting to the existing conditions.
Looking at the entire site, 40 per cent of it is covered in greenery. If we include the green roof, this figure rises to 53 per cent!

When it comes to climate protection, SaluVet relies not only on internal measures but also on active collaboration with other companies and initiatives. In our view, sustainable development is achieved most effectively when knowledge is shared and solutions are developed collaboratively.
Since 2021, SaluVet has been a member of the Corporate Climate Protection Network, a platform for companies that are jointly committed to greater climate protection in their day-to-day operations.
As part of the KLIMAfit funding programme run by the State of Baden-Württemberg, SaluVet has established a systematic climate protection management system. Through workshops and individual consultancy, a greenhouse gas inventory was drawn up and specific measures were developed to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.
SaluVet is also part of regional networks: within the Lake Constance–Upper Swabia Energy Impulse Network, we contribute to discussions on energy efficiency and practical climate protection solutions – alongside other companies from the region.
